C2.1 Flashcards
What is relative atomic mass?
The ratio of the average mass of 1 atom of an element to one twelfth of the mass of an atom of carbon-12
In the periodic table which number represents the relative atomic number?
The larger number
How to you work out the relative formula mass?
-Write down the values of the Elements
- add them all together
Mg(oh)2
Mg=24.3 O=16 H=1
1 mg 2 o 2 h = 58.3
What is empirical formula?
The simplest whole number ratio of the atoms of each element in a compound.
What is the meaning of pure?
It means when a substance just contains one element or compound
What is the meaning of an impure substance?
Mixtures are impure substances as they contain more than 1 ELEMENT/COMPOUND
What is an alloy?
A mixture of metals, with one or more elements.
How do you use melting points to determine purity?
pure substance - is a single temperature
impure - LESS than the pure substance melts over a range of temperatures
