Distillation Flashcards
How does simple distillation work?
It separates a solvent from a solution, it relies on the solvent have a much lower boiling point than the solute, when the solution is heated the solvent boils but the solute does not p, the solvent then escapes from the solution In it’s gas state
What happens after the solvent boils.
The solute that escapes the solution Is cooled and condensed back to its liquid state by a condenser, a piece of apparatus that is kept cold using a flow of cold water.
How does fractional distillation work?
Fractional distillation separates 2 or more substances fro. A mixture in the liquid state. It relies on each substance having a different boiling point, and uses a special piece of equipment called a fractionating column.
Why does the fractionating column make fractional distillation more efficient?
Because it has a large surface area on which the vapours can continually condense.
