-controlled how long the movies could be, blocked actor identification because they didn’t want the actors to gain too much power, control, fame

- formed after the film industry broke away from the MPPC
- farthest away from MPPC, had lots of cheap land, good weather
- by 1919 80% if the world’s films were made in socal; Hollywood/ SoCal has remained center of the film industry, even attracts foreign talent

- introduction to film in 1927
- first famous film with sound = jazz film
- diminished the international market b/c movies were no longer universal (nonverbal language)
Golden Age
age of the Great Depression and 2nd World War
- film helped people escape the hard times
- musicals and comedies were very popular
- important social issues were also shown in films (i.e. gangsters)
- documentary films

followed Golden Age

- spirit of competition is now one of working together
- movies sell to TV networks
- TV series make movies - made by studios

- rentals
- originally feared, people can stay at home and watch
- actually gave more revenue stream; selling film to video store to be rented - sell at high cost
sell through
selling videos directly to public at lower cost but could sell in volume
-originally aimed at family films
direct-to-video
never in move theater, directly to video
- started with movies that were just bad
- the sequel to animation films
- the general sequel or prequels
- make 2/3rd of profit from videos
audience
huge decline after WWII
- remains primarily young people
- teens - repeat business, more likely to buy concessions, not as effected by critics
- boy teens; want to see now
- female teens - girl power
- fastest growing segment = baby boomers
persuasive nature of film
- high impact, high involved medium
- environment draws you in
- doesn’t attempt to persuade - central focus = entertainment
move to digital
digital projection system replace film projection
-digital technology has effect on content film, more computer generation and improved special effects
digital distribution
used to have to ship film reels, replaced after use
- digital can be sent for pennies, endless perfect personal copes can be made
- downside = initial cost (hardware/software, infrastructure)
