Fighting DIsease Flashcards
Pathogens-
Organisms that cause disease
4 Types of Pathogens-
Bacteria, Viruses, Fungi, Protists
Bacteria-
One celled micoorganisms
Toxin-
A poison produced by bacterial pathogens that damage cells
Viruses-
Tiny particles much smaller than bacteria.
What diseases are caused by viruses?
Colds, influenza flu
What are some diseases caused by bacteria?
Strepthroat, Food poisining
Fungi-
molds and yeasts
What are some fungi diseases?
Athletes foot
How are pathogens spread?
Person to person contact, contaminated object, animal bite, the environment.
What are some examples of person to person transfer?
Shaking hands, hugging
What are some examples of Contaminated object transfer?
Eating/drinking after someone
What are some diseases you can get from an animal bite?
Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever
What disease can you get from pathogens in the environment?
Botulism
what is your bodies first line of defense?
Barriers like , Skin, breathing passages, and your mouth and stomach
Whats your bodies 2nd line of defense
Inflammatory Response
what is Inflammatory response?
When white blood cells leak from blood vessels into nearby tissues. The white blood cells then fight the pathogens
Phagocyte?
A white blood cell that destroys pathogens by engulfing them and breaking them down
what is your body’s 3rd line of defense?
immune response
What is immune response
Then immune system can distinguish between different types of pathogens. the immune system reacts to each very specific pathogen.
T cells-
a Lymphoctye the identifies pathogens
Lymphocytes-
types of white blood cells
Antigens-
molecules on cells that the immune system recognizes something as either a part of your body, or not a part of your body
B cells-
A lymphocyte that produces chemicals that help destroy a specific kind of pathogen
