CH.1 Plate tectonics Flashcards
Geology-
The study of earth
Geologist-
a scientist who studies the forces that make and shape planet earth.
Constructive forces-
They are forces that shape the surface by building up mountains and landmasses
Destructive forces-
They slowly wear away mountains and eventually every other feature on the face.
Continents-
7 landmasses surrounded by water
What are continents made of?
Granite and other rocks
Pressure-
The force pushing on a surface or area
What is a siezemic wave?
a wave that is produced by an earthquake
What rock makes up the ocean floor?
basalt
When you go deeper into the earth, the temperature…..
Increases
When you go deeper into the earth the pressure,……
increases
What are the 3 layers of earth?
Crust, Mantle, Core
Crust-
The layer of rock that forms earth’s skin.
Mantle-
A layer of hot rock
Lithosphere-
The uppermost part of the mantle that forms a hard rigid layer
Asthenosphere-
A layer below the lithosphere that is soft and bendable
The outer core-
a layer of molten metal that surrounds the inner core.
Inner core-
a dense ball of solid metal
What are the three types of heat transfer?
Radiation, Conduction, Convection
Radiation-
The transfer of heat through an empty space
Heat transfer-
The movement of energy from a warmer object to a cooler object.
Conduction-
Heat transfer by direct contact of particles of matter
Convection-
Heat transfer by the movement of heated fluid
Density-
The measure of how much mass or gravity is in an object
