Fighting Disease Flashcards
Are viruses cells?
No, viruses are not cells.
In what two ways do bacteria make you feel ill?
Damaging cells and producing toxins.
How do viruses replicate themselves?
They invade cells and cause them to produce copies of the virus. The cell then bursts and releases the new viruses.
How do viruses make you feel ill?
Through the cell damage of bursting cells.
What are microorganisms that cause disease called?
Pathogens.
Name three defences that help prevent pathogens from entering the body.
Skin, hair and mucus.
What do platelets do?
Cause blood to clot to seal wounds.
In what three ways do white blood cells attack invading microbes?
Consuming them, producing antibodies and producing antitoxins.
How to antibodies work?
White blood cells produce antibodies to kill the microbes. When the same microbe attacks, the antibodies can be quickly produced to attack the microbe.
What is found inside a vaccination?
Dead/inactive microorganisms.
How does a vaccination work?
They cause the white blood cells to produce antibodies to attack the microbe.
What do painkillers do?
They relieve pain and reduce symptoms.
What do antibiotics do?
They kill or prevent the growth of bacteria.
Why is it difficult to destroy viruses?
It would be hard to destroy viruses without destroying the body’s own cells.
What is a resistant bacteria?
Bacteria that are immune to a type of antibiotic.
