Cloning Flashcards
What is a cutting?
Cutting a part of a plant and planting it to produce identical copies of the parent plant.
How are plants cloned?
Through either cuttings or tissue culture.
What is tissue culture?
Where plant cells are grown using hormones into new plants which are identical to the parent plant.
How are animals cloned?
Through either embryo transplants or adult cell cloning.
What is an embryo transplant?
Artificially fertilising an egg and taking the embryo, that has divided many times, and implanting them in a mother before they become specialised.
What is adult cell cloning?
Removing the nucleus of an unfertilised egg and a complete set of chromosomes from an adult body cell. Then placing the chromosomes inside the empty egg and giving it a small electric shock before being implanted into a mother.
Give a reason against cloning.
If a population is too closely related, a new disease could kill the entire population as there may be no allele giving a resistance to the disease.
