Fields And Isolines Flashcards
Field map
Used to represent any quantity that varies in a region of space
Field
- region of space that has a measurable quantity at every point
Isoline
Connecting points of equal value
- isotherms: points of equal temperature
- isobars: points of barometric (air) pressure
- contours: points of altitude/elevation
Map
Representation of something
Topography
- study of earths surface shape and features
- topography maps contain contour lines
- contour lines show the highs and lows of earths surface
- terrain is the 3D quality of earths surface
Streams represented
.Direction of stream is shown on a topographic map by the way a contour line crosses the stream
. Streams are shown as a blue line on maps
. When contour lines cross a stream, the stream is flowing the opposite way then what the contour lines are pointing towards
Depression contours
- depression contours show lower elevation
- drawn like contour lines with tick marks on the inside of a closed circle
- these tick marks are called hachure marks
Identifying hills
Hills are represented on a topographic map by a series of concentric contour lines in a rough circle
Finding slope
Closely spaced contour lines represent a steep slope
Widely spaced contour lines represent a gentle slope
Benchmark
Place where the elevation is known
Map scale
Map scale indicates your distance along the ground NOT elevation
Gradient
Shows how quickly the value changes from one point to another
