what is chronic fatigue syndrome

cause of CFS
unknown- could be viral or psychological stress or a combination of factos
clinical manifestations of CFS
sudden onset, viral like illness, enlarged lymph nodes, extreme fatigue, fever, upper respiratory symptoms
severe fatigue
symptoms of depression
low grade fever
cognitive disturbances- head ache, sleep disturbances, muscle pain
physical exam is normal
diagnostic criteria for CFS
loss of memory or concentration
feeling unrefreshed after a nights sleep
chronic insomnia
muscle pain
frequent h/a
multi-joint pain with out redness or swilling pain
medical treatment of CFS
symptom management
over years with minimal improvement
cognitive and behavioral improvement helpful
sleep disturbance- relaxation techniques and sleep hygiene
homeopathy and supplements (fatty acids and magnesium)
treated= better outcomes
