Fetal Heart Rate Monitoring Flashcards
Types of Monitoring
External: Ultrasound, Internal: Spiral Electrode
Terms relating to contractions
Periodic and Episodic, not related to variability though
Healthy pattern of Accelerations
15x15
Reading an early Decel
Healthy for the infant. THe contraction stimulates the vegal nerve and temporarily reduces the HR
Late Decels mean what?
Possible Placental insuffucuency, blood flow could be cut off to fetus, this is dangerous and the mother will need to relax placenta, or have baby
Actions taken during Variable Decels
Insert sterile NS into amniotic fluid (amniocentesis)
Meaning of a repetitive late decel
Compromised acidodic baby, placental insufficiency
What is done to the mother if there are repetitive late decals?
Non-rebreather mask, Reposition to side, ^ fluids, stop pit, give tocolytic (Terbutaline), Possible vaginal exam to assess for cord prolapse
If maternal blood pressure is low and won’t come back up, what meds would be administered
ephedrine or phenylephrine
Fetal Accelerations mean what
Caused by fetal stimulation, completely healthy
Fetal Early Decels mean what?
Head contractions from fundus, pressure. These are normal, not associated with any dangerous things
Fetal Late Decels mean what
Uteroplacental insufficiency. THis is dangerous and needs to be dealt with tocolytics
Variable decels mean what?
Umbilical cord compression, Could be dangerous, but normally not mortality
Macrosomia
Chubby baby, enlarged organs and fat shoulders
Terbutaline causes what reponse in the mother
calms respiratory distress, tachycardia, and fetal distress
