Fetal Heart Flashcards
Callen states best fetal ❤️imaging is done at
20-22 weeks. Bone shadow in 3rd tri makes ❤️hard to see.
At what gestational week has the heart formed all 4 chambers
Week 8
❤️ occupies ___ of chest
1/3
CV system
1st to function
Circulation begins 5 wks
Heart initially a tube. Develops by 7 wks
Fetal Circulation
Placenta -> Umbilical vein + (ductus venosus bypasses liver & drains to IVC) left portal vein -> liver -> hep veins -> IVC -> rt atrium (-> rt vent -> main pulmonary artery -> ductus arteriosus bypasses lungs -> aorta) -> foramen ovale -> lt atrium -> lt ventricle -> aorta -> common iliacs -> rt/lt internal iliacs -> 2 umbilical arteries -> placenta
Bypasses fetal lungs
Ductus Arteriosus
Closes after birth & becomes lig arteriosum
Bypasses liver
Ductus Venosus. Dumps into IVC
4 ch
Rt vent closer to anterior chest wall.
Lt atrium closest to aorta and spine.
Asses ❤️position, septal defects, patency of valves, TV inserts lower than MV
5 ch
Tilt up from 4 ch. asc aorta makes 5th chamber
Long axis view
LVOT
From long axis. Tilt more right and obtain
RVOT
Short axis view
Long chest. *RVOT.
Left atrium close to
Spine
Right vent close to
Anterior chest wall
Foramen ovale
Flap in rt atrium
