Fetal Circulation Flashcards
What are the three shunts in the fetus?
- Foramen ovale
- Ductus arteriosus
- Ductus venosus
What vessels does the ductus arteriosus connect?
The pulmonary artery to the aorta
Where is the placenta located?
At the fundus of the uterus
What is the placenta connect to the fetus via?
The umbilical cord
What is the umbilical cord surrounded by?
The amnion which contains Wharton’s jelly
What is embedded in Wharton’s jelly?
Two umbilical arteries and the umbilical vein
What does the umbilical vein carry?
Oxygen and nutrient rich blood from the placenta
What does the ductus venosus drain into
The IVC
What is the purpose of the valve of the inferior vena cava?
It directs blood to pass through the foramen ovale
When does the foramen ovale close?
4 months
When id the functional closure of the ductus arteriosus?
First hour caused by increased oxygen and fall in prostaglandins
When is the structural closure of the ductus arteriosus?
Between 1 and 4 months. Caused by thickening of tunica intima
What does the umbilical vein become?
Ligamentum teres hepatis
When does the ductus venosus functionally close?
Within 1 to 3 hours
What do the umbilical arteries become?
Medial umbilical ligaments (within medial umbilical folds)
