Femoral Triangle/Anterior Thigh Muscles Flashcards
What is the route of the great saphenous vein?
Begins at the medial side of the dorsal venous arch of the foot –> ascends up the medial side of the leg and thigh –> terminates in the femoral vein on the anterior thigh, after passing through the saphenous opening of the deep fascia
How are the popliteal nodes divided? What do the superficial nodes drain?
Nodes are drained into two groups– a superior, horizontal group and an inferior, verticle group. Superior nodes drain the same structures as the external pudendal, superficial circumflex iliac, and superficial epigastric veins. Inferior nodes drain the remaining superficial tissues of the lower extremities.
What are the components of the anterior compartment of the thigh?
The quadriceps femoris muscles as well as sartorius, the femoral artery (w/ branches) and vein (w/ tributaries), and deep inguinal lymph nodes.
What are the commonalities among quadriceps femoris muscles?
All insert on the patella and all function to extend the leg via the patellar tendon. Patellar tendon inserts onto the tibial tuberosity. They are ALL INNERVATED by the femoral nerve.
What is unique about the rectus femoris?
This muscle can extend the leg AND flex the thigh because the muscle crosses both the hip and knee joint
What is unique about the sartorius?
This muscle can flex the leg AND flex the thigh because the muscle crosses both the hip and knee joint
What nerve innervates the rectus femoris and the sartorius?
Femoral nerve
What nerve innervates the muscles of the anterior thigh?
Femoral nerve
What are the three divisions of the funnel-shaped femoral sheath and what do these contain?
Lateral compartment- containing the femoral artery; middle compartment- containing the femoral vein; medial compartment AKA femoral canal- containing lymph nodes and lymphatic vessels
What can develop, predominantly in women, within the femoral canal?
If the Abd viscera such as the small intestine protrudes through the ring into the femoral canal, a femoral hernia results.
What are the four branches of the femoral artery?
- Deep femoral artery
- External pudendal artery
- Superficial circumflex iliac artery
- Superficial epigastric artery
What are the boundaries of the femoral triangle?
Base = inguinal ligament
Medial side = adductor longus
Lateral side = sartorius muscle
Contents: NAVL: femoral artery and its branches, femoral vein and its tributaries, femoral nerve, lymphatics, and the femoral sheath
Where do the tributaries of the great saphenous vein come from?
Tributaries come from the veins that correspond to the branches of the femoral artery
Which branch of the femoral artery supplies the posterior and medial compartments of the thigh?
deep femoral, specifically, the perforating arteries (4 of them).
