conflict between genders as women are dominated by men (patriarchal)
What was the first wave of feminism?
Suffrage movement (right to vote)
late 19th and early 20th century
What was the second wave of feminism?
Women’s liberation 1960s
broadened fight for rights in terms of sexuality, family and workplace
What was the third wave of feminism?
1990s onwards
recognises women are all different/individuals and their issues are not universal
What are the four types of feminism?
liberal
radical
marxist
difference
What are liberal feminists?
(plus example)
believe inequality can be changed through public shifts
e.g changes to law
What are radical feminists?
believes women’s position is not improving and radical revolutionary action must take place
believe to be equal women and men should live separately (separatism)
favour political lesbianism
What are marxist feminists?
combine marxist and feminist thinking and believe female inequality is rooted from capitalism
What are difference feminists?
argue we can’t view all women as having the same experiences of patriarchy just because they are women
changes based on ethnicity, class, age, religion etc
How do feminists study society?
argue it is inappropriate to study women in a scientific way
must be interpretivist
