female reproductive system pt 2 Flashcards
define uterus
The uterus is a hollow, muscular organ in the female reproductive system. It is located in the pelvic cavity, between the bladder and the rectum.
Menstruation
Every month, the lining of the uterus (the endometrium) thickens in preparation for a possible pregnancy. If no fertilized egg implants, the lining is shed, leading to menstruation, a process that typically lasts a few days. This cycle is regulated by hormonal changes (primarily estrogen and progesterone).
Pregnancy Support:
After fertilization, the fertilized egg (zygote) travels down the fallopian tube to the uterus, where it can implant into the thickened uterine lining. Once implanted, the uterus provides an environment for the developing embryo. Hormones like human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) are produced to help maintain the pregnancy.
Fetal Development:
During pregnancy, the uterus grows substantially to accommodate the developing fetus. It provides not only physical space but also supplies nutrients and oxygen through the placenta, while removing waste products. The amniotic sac inside the uterus protects the fetus from shocks and maintains a stable environment.
Labor and Delivery:
At the end of pregnancy, the uterus contracts in a coordinated manner to help expel the baby. These contractions (known as labor) help push the baby through the cervix and into the birth canal (vagina). The process is typically accompanied by the release of oxytocin, a hormone that stimulates these contractions.
