Female Repro Anatomy Flashcards
What is the arterial supply of the ovary?
Ovarian artery from the aorta
What is the venous drainage of the ovary?
Ovarian vein into the IVC on the right and left renal vein on the left
What structure is the ovarian artery and vein carried in?
Suspensory ligament of ovary
Describe anteflexion and anteversion in terms of the anatomical position of the uterus.
Anteflexion-uterus bend forward on the cervix
Anteversion-uterus at 90 degree angle to the vagina
What is the name of the space between the bladder and the uterus?
Vesicouterine pouch
What is the name of the space between uterus and the rectum?
Retrouterine pouch (of Douglas)
What is the clinical significance of the vesicouterine and retrouterine pouches?
Important area for pelvic infections
Retrouterine pouch can be pierced into in back street abortion, infection risk
What two structures does the ovarian ligament link together?
Links ovaries and uterus
Describe the broad ligament.
Peritoneal sheet draped over uterus and uterine tubes
What is the blood supply of the uterus?
Uterine artery from the internal iliac artery.
What is the venous drainage of the uterus?
Uterine vein from internal iliac vein
What type of cells line the uterine tubes?
Ciliated columnar epithelium and secretory cells
What are the layers of the uterus called?
Inner to outer- endometrium, myometrium, perimetrium
How many muscle layers are in the myometrium?
3 layers of smooth muscle
What type of epithelium is the endometrium made up of?
Simple columnar epithelium
What is the lymphatic drainage of the uterus?
Iliac, sacral, aortic and inguinal lymph nodes
What are the two layers of the endometrium called? Describe them.
Stratum functionalis- top layer, supplied by spiral arteries, lost each month
Stratum basalis- lower layer, supplied by straight arteries, contains gland bases, build the stratum functionalis
What are the two layers of the stratum functionalis?
Stratum compactum (this is the one that gets shed) Stratum spongiosum
What is the epithelium of the vagina? What is the functional significance?
Non-keratinised stratified squamous
Protects against wear and tear
What is the most common site of fertilisation?
Ampulla of the uterine tube
What is the average length of the uterine tubes?
10-12cm
What is the lymphatic drainage of the ovaries?
Para-aortic nodes
What is the female sex determining hormone?
Wnt 4
What is the epithelium of the ovary?
Simple cuboidal
What layer is found underneath the epithelium of the ovary?
Tunica albuginea
What is the name of the funnel shaped opening of the uterine tube?
Infundibulum
What is the narrowest part of the uterine tubes?
Isthmus
What is type of epithelium lines the cervix?
Non keratinising stratified squamous
What is the blood supply of the vagina?
Upper- uterine artery
Lower- vaginal and internal pudendal
Which type of ovarian follicle consists of a single layer of cells around an oocyte?
Primordial follicle
Which type of ovarian follicle contains a fluid filled antrum?
Secondary follicle
A primary follicle’s cells are differentiated into what two layers?
Granulosa cells
Theca cells
What is the name of the follicles of the brink of release?
Tertiary follicles
