Feeding Problems Flashcards
Why is the fact that newborn structures are smaller and closer in proximity ideal?
It’s ideal for sucking due to a large tongue, large buccal pads, and no teeth.
What are the 5 functions of feeding and swallowing?
Satisfying hunger Reflexive sucking Sensory & motor stimulation Mother/caregiver infant bonding Oral motor skill development
Name 3 normal structures of infant A&P
Close approximation of tongue, soft palate and pharyngeal wall.
Higher larynx adjacent to C1-C3
Tubular and narrower epiglottis
Describe the oral phase of infant feeding
Sucking to stabilize nipple, creating pressure gradient for fluid flow and controlling the bolus before swallow.
The rooting reflex helps grasp on nipple
Nipple compression
Negative pressure
Describe the pharyngeal phase of infant feeding
Coordination of nasal breathing, sucking and swallowing. Should be 1:1 ratio
What does the esophageal phase consist of?
UES and LES
What are the signs/symptoms of pedi dysphagia?
Poor oral suction
Inadequate volume of intake(if they can’t make a lip seal)
Lengthy feeding times
Nasal regurgitation
Excessive air take(getting half air half formula)
Coughing
Choking
Poor weight gain
Excessive energy expenditure
Discomfort during feeding
Stressful feeding btwn caretaker & infant
How can we modify feeding?
Have mom relax and comfort her
Use proper feeding equipment & methods
Upright positioning (no horizontal feeding)
Stick with what works - consistent feeding methods
Manage air intake (burp breaks every ounce)
Limit feeding times to 30-45 min
Name 2 assessments during feedings
Video fluoroscopy
FEES
MBS (easier)
