61. 1- applicability and definitions
FAR part 1: definitions and abbreviations

61.3 PIC under IFR flight plan or IMC (e)(I)
Pilot must hold a current instrument rating
- enter class A airspace
- inspection of certificate if requested by the administrator, NTSB, TSA, and any federal, state, or local law enforcement
61.19: Duration of pilot and instructor certificate
Flight instructor certificate:
- is effective only while the holder has a current pilot certificate; and
- expires 24 calendar months from the month in which it was issued or renewed
61.51 pilot logbook (f)(g)
- Pilot may log instrument time but only time flown solely by reference to instruments actual or simulated
- CFII can log actual instrument when training in IMC- student also
- For logging time for recent experience, must include:
- location of approach
- type of approach
- Safety pilot name (if needed)
- date
61.57 Recent flight experience (c)(d)
Instrument experience
- must be actual or simulated IMC
- within the preceding 6 calendar months;
1. 6 instrument approaches
2. Holding procedures
3. Intercepting and tracking courses through the use of NAVAID systems
4. After the first 6 months, you have an additional 6 months to become current again.
- fly 6 approaches, holding, intercepting and tracking, with a safety pilot (anyone who holds at least a private pilot certificate in category and class) or do an IPC
After the 2nd 6 months you must do an IPC
Instrument proficiency
Must be given by:
- FAA examiner
- FAA designated examiner
- any CFII
- company check pilot
- if in the military a military check pilot
1. Tested in appropriate aircraft
2. Use tasks and limitations out of PTS
