Q

Position reports: a report over a known location as transmitted by aircraft to ATC.
(IPTATEN)

A
ATC needs to know where aircraft are in the IFR environment, and this is achieved by ATC radar, limited reports from aircraft, or full position reports. Full position reports contain:
I- identification
P- position
T- time current
A- altitude
T- type of flight plan (IFR, VFR)
E- ETA to next reporting point
N- name of reporting point to follow

En-route clearances

A

Read back all numbers and instructions:
- altitudes
- altitude restrictions
- radar vectors
Your responsibility to accept or refuse any clearance
Any altitude changes should be made without delay

Q

Compulsory reporting points (reporting points that must be reported to ATC)

A
  • solid colored triangles are mandatory reporting points
  • open triangles are on-request reporting points
  • in a radar environment after having been informed of being in radar contact by ATC, you may discontinue position reports

E- estimated TAS +/- 10KTS or 5%
L- leaving holding fix or point
O- outage of any NAV/COM
U- unable to climb or descend 500 FPM
S- safety of flight
Out of radar contact

Flying airways

A
  • always fly down the middle of victor airways
  • safety corridor 8 NM wide
  • when weather permits pilots job to see and avoid traffic
  • stay informed of weather while en-route AWOS, ASOS, ATIS, and EFAS (flight watch) 122.0
    HIWAS continuous broadcast
    TWEB off selected VORs

Q

VFR on top: when weather conditions permit VFR, you can request VFR on top in lieu of assigned altitudes

A
  • must be requested by pilot
  • allows pilot to fly VFR altitudes based on magnetic course
  • pilot must comply with VFR weather minimums
  • must comply with all IFR:
Stay at or above minimum IFR altitude
    Still do position reports
    Comply to clearance from ATC
  • your still on IFR flight plan but ATC is not responsible for separating you from other IFR traffic
  • IFR and VFR rules apply
  • not available in class A
