20,000 workers were locked out of the Putilov Steel Works after the pay talks collapsed and went on strike with other factory workers
What happened on Thursday 23 February?
90,000 workers went on strike and 50 factories closed. They joined the women’s march in the Petrograd suburbs. Militant students and women from bread queues joined the protest till it got to 240,000.
What did the police do on Thursday 23 February?
The police rounded up and restored order by the evening with no casualties.

200,000 workers went on strike and crowds overturned Tsarist statues, waved red flags, wore red rosettes and shouted revolutionary slogans called for the Tsars end and singing the French national anthem ‘La Marseillaise’.
Was there any political radicals influencing in the February Revolution?
Not really, it wasn’t outwardly started by radical groups, but some revolutionaries were seen to be giving out revolutionary slogans to protesters.

250,000 workers were protesting, which was over half of Petrograd’s work force, so most factories and shops were closed.
No newspapers were distributed and no public transport were in use.

Rodzianko, the Duma President, sent the Tsar a telegram about the strikes, but the Tsar was uninterested and only told him to dissolve the Duma the next day.

Soldiers were ordered against the crowds, but some rebelled such as in the Volynskii regiment where a sergeant shot his army commander, adding 66,00 man and 40,000 rifles to the revolution and other soldiers joined.

The Tsar came back from his military headquarters back to Petrograd. He sent a letter to Rodzianko to share their power, which Rodzianko denied and said it was too late.

The Duma met against the Tsars command and set up the 12-man provisional committee without him, with the army’s support. Revolutionaries also made their own Soviet government to take over the government and supply food to the city.

What happened on to the Tsar on the way to Petrograd?
His train was stopped and diverted by rebellious rail-workers to Pskov. He abdicated for his son and his brother, the Grand Duke Mikhail, but then decided his son was too frail, so he gave it to his brother without asking him. Mikhail refused the offer, ending the Tsars regime.
