features of long term memory Flashcards
research duration: bahrick et al procedure
392 participants 17-74 (all american but pop val) tested
participants provided real school yearbooks. conditions included free recall test where participants tried to recall names of people in their graduate class and photo recognition test consisting of 50 pictures and identifying a name from each photo
bahrick et al findings:
participants better at photo recognition than free recall. participants who were tested within 15 years of graduation were 90% accurate in photo recognition and 60% in free recall. after 48 years 70% accurate in photo recognition and 30% accurate in free recall.
bahrick conclusion
they concluded ltm has a potentially unlimited duration
bahrick limitation and strength: pop
strength:large sample size of nearly 400 people and large age range - representative.
limitation: they were all american so results may be specific to that culture alone
bahrick strength: mundane realism
task and material used (remembering names and faces) of people they originally knew is a task that therefore has high mundane realism
