factors affecting accuracy of ewt part 2 Flashcards
post event discussion research gabbert et al procedure
sample of 60 students from university of aberdeen and 60 older adults recurited from older community. pts watched video of girl stealing money from a wallet. pts were either tested individually (control) or in pairs (co-witness group) pts in co-witness group told they watched same video. however they had in fact seen different perspectives of the same crime and only one person had witnessed the girl stealing.
pts in the co-witness group discussed the crime together.
all pts then completed a questionnaire, testing their memory of the event.
findings
gabbert et al found that 71% of witnesses in the co witness group recalled info they had not actually seen and 60% said the girl was guilty despite not seeing her commit a crime
strength application
raised awareness that the criminal justice system cannot always rely on ewt as a basis for sometimes incorrect convictions
strength application 2
highlighting misleading information as a negative factor in ewt has led to new techniques designed to improve memory retrieval such as cognitive interview developed by geiselman and colleagues
limiation validity
p: other factors have been found to affect the accuracy of ewt like age
e: children seem to have a greater susceptability to leading questions than adults according to goodman and reid. younger kids are more likely to absorb misleading info into their memories of the events if they are asked the same question repeatedly - leichtman and ceci
