Q

research coding: baddeley procedure

A

participants given one of 4 word lists to learn
list one = acoustically similar (sounded the same eg hat cat, bat)
list two = acoustically dissimilar (sounded different eg hat stage ball)
list three = semantically similar (same meaning eg big large)
list 4 semantically dissimilar (different meanings eg gate big)
participants first recalled list immediately to test for stm
then recalled again after 20 mins to test ltm

Q

results findings

A

participants did worse with acoustically similar words in stm (overload) suggesting in stm words are coded according to sound because similar sounding info conflicted with each other
in ltm they did worse in semantically similar words suggesting words in ltm are coded according to meaning as info with similar meanings conflicted with each other

Q

strength: difference in code

A

baddely identifies clear difference in coding between two memory stores of stm and ltm which has contributed to our understanding of the memory system which led to the multi store model of memory

Q

limitation: stimuli

A

used artificial stimuli (random words lists) which lacks mundane realism as the lists has no personal meaning to participants therefore lacking eco val
