FC5: Acids, Bases and Salts Flashcards
What are bases?
Proton acceptors- receive H+ ions
What are the three common alkalis?
KOH
NaOH
NH3
What is the product of reaction between an acid and an alkali?
Salt and water
What is the formula for ethanoic acid, an example of a weak acid?
CH3COOH
What is a weak acid?
An acid that only partially ionises in water
How is ethanoic acid dissociated?
CH3COO- + H+
How do you know if a reactant is solid?
It isn’t specified as solution
What is included in an ionic equation?
Only the reacting particles
How do you do an ionic equation?
Balance it normally
Separate aqueous components
Remove anything that appears on both sides, leaving the reactants
Remember to make sure charges balance!
What is the reaction of a metal and acid?
Metal + acid —–> Salt + hydrogen
What is the reaction of a metal oxide and acid?
Metal oxide + acid ——> salt + water
What is the reaction of a metal carbonate and acid?
Metal carbonate + acid ——–> salt + CO2 + water
What are alkalis?
Water soluble base
What are acids?
Proton donors- release H+ ions in aqueous solution
