FC12: Group 2 Flashcards
Why does Ba ‘react more quickly?
Large atomic radius
Lower ionisation energy- more reactive
What is the metal hydroxide pattern down group 2?
They become more soluble so the solutions become more alkaline
How is Mg(OH)2 only sparingly soluble?
It looks insoluble but if we test the pH of the water it is 10.3 so there must be hydroxide ions there
Why is the solubility higher down group 2?
As the metal ion gets larger down the group, it is less strongly attracted to the small hydroxide ion. As a general rule, the bigger the mismatch between the positive and negative ions, the more soluble it is.
Why do we ignore the rule of metals of a group tending to react with water to produce hydroxides for Be down to Ba?
Be- doesn't react. Mg- reacts very slowly Ca- reacts quickly Sr- reacts more quickly Ba- reacts more quickly
