FC2 Flashcards
Info of Atoms
Atom is the smallest unit of an element.
An atom consists of a nucleus made up of 2 types of subatomic particles- neutrons and protons.
Electrons occupies a region of space around the nucleus
Properties of subatomic particles
The actual mass and charge of a subatomic particle is extremely small, so it’s easier for chemists to use relative mass and relative charge.
Define isotope
Atoms of the same element with different numbers of neutrons and different mass numbers
Properties of isotopes
Different densities
Different rate of diffusion
Different BPT, MPT
Define relative atomic mass
Weighed average mass of an atom of the element compared with 1/12 the mass of an atom of carbon-12
What is Avagadros constant?
6.02 x 10^23
What is a mass spectrometer used for?
A device which makes it possible to measure the mass of an individual atom or molecule
What is a mole?
Amount of a substance that contains 6.02 x 10^23
What is the equation to find the calculations of moles?
Moles = mass/ Mr
What is the calculation to find the number of particles?
Number of particles = mole x NA
