FC16 Flashcards
Define Organic Compound
Involves compounds containing at least carbon and hydrogen. The simpler organic compounds are Hyrdrocarbons
Define hydrocarbons
Compounds containing hydrogen and carbon only
e.g, Alkanes and Alkenes
Define function group
An atom or group of atoms that gives a compound its characteristic chemical properties
e.g, OH group in alcohol
Define homologous series
A series of compounds that have the same general formula but each successive member differ by an additional CH2 unit
Define saturated organic compound
Contains only single bonds between carbon atoms
Define unsaturated organic chemistry
Contains at least one double bond or triple bond between carbon atoms
Define alkanes
Saturated hydrocarbons with no specific function group
CnH2n+2
What does structural isomers mean?
Compounds with the same molecular formula but different structural formulae
What does volatility mean?
How readily a substance vaporises/turns into a gas
Define complete combustion
When there is a sufficient oxygen available, and the hydrogen and carbon in alkane oxidised to form H2O and CO2 respectively
What does incomplete combustion mean?
When there is limited amount of oxygen available.
Why can complete combustion be hazardous?
The carbon monoxide produced is colourless, odourless and toxic gas. At high concentrations, carbon dioxide can kill
