Composition of fats?
Fats are made up of three fatty acids and one glycerol. Elemental composition is C.H.O, carbon, hydrogen and oxygen
Classification of fats?
Saturates and unsaturated fats
Sources of saturated fats?
Butter, milk, meat, cheese, eggs, cream
Sources of unsaturated fats?
Sunflower oil, olive oil, nuts, seeds, fish oils (e.g. cod liver oil), oily fish
Functions of fats?
Heat and energy
Contains fat soluble vitamins A,D,E,K
A layer of fat under the skin (adipose tissue) insulates the body and prevents heat loss
Protects delicate organs
Gives a feeling of fullness and delays hunger
Fat facts
Fat is very important however it should only be eaten in very small amounts
Current healthy eating guidelines tell us to reduce the amount of fat in our diet
Over intake of fat can lead to health problems such as obesity and heart problems
