Fat-Soluble Vitamins: A,D,E and K Flashcards
Vitamin A
Rich source in liver, Crucial role in maintenance of good vision-particularly in low light
Vitamin A forms
Retinol (supports reproduction), Retinal (vision), Retinoic acid (regulates growth), Beta-carotene (plant food- makes retinal), Retinyl esters (animal food-makes retinol)
Unit of Measurement of Vitamin A
1 microgram of retinol = 1 Retinol activity equivalent (RAE)
12 microgram of beta-carotene = 1 microgram of retinol
Other Vitamin A functions
Cell differentiation, Integrity of epithelial cells, Integrity of mucous membrane, Necessary for Tlymphocyte function and other immune function aspects, Supports normal growth
RDA for Adult (19-50) Men/Women
Men: 900 microgram of retinol (3000 I.U), Women: 700 microgram of retinol (2333 I.U)
Deficiency of Vitamin A Symptoms
Symptoms of deficiency include anorexia, retarded growth, increased susceptibility to infections, keratinization of epithelial cells of skin
Vitamin A Deficiency and Blindness
