A

fat is broken down in the body by a process of oxidation and energy is released

formation of adipose tissue - excess fat that is not immediately used is converted into adipose tissue and stored in the fatty cells over the body and it has three functions
1. energy reserve
2. protection of delicate muscles
3. insulating layer to keep a constant body temp
- stately factor in the diet
- adds taste and flavour to food

omega 6 is called linolenic acid
- as part of makeup of cells
- prevents poor growth
- helps improve skin problems
- eicosanoids like prostaglandins help reduce inflammation of the heart and prevent blood clotting
- maintain a healthy immune system

A

High density lipoproteins proteins - good cholesterol
helps usher away LDL away from the arteries and other body tissues ti the liver, where it is broken down into bile and disposed of and thus prevents plaque forming which would be disposed in the artery
reduces risk of atherosclerosis, blood clots

  • genetics if they have a direct relative male under 55 with cvd and female under 65 with cvd
  • obesity
  • age and sex - cholesterol rises slightly with age and men are likely to be caused as women have higher HDL levels
  • excessive alcohol drinking
  • stress
  • smoker
