method of fasting?
-obligatory in Ramadan

- last 5 odd nights of Ramadan is the night of power (laylat ul Qadr)
- the reward for prayer is better than the prayer of 1000 months

Exemption from fasting?
must make up for the fast, day by day or by other means
-women on menstruation, and during pregnancy/breastfeeding
-sick who will get worse if they fast
-old and feeble, must give fidya (feed a poor person twice a day/ pay for their food)
-travelers

-children below puberty
-insane people
punishment for intentionally breaking fast?
- paying Kaffara
- continuous 60 day fast in addition to qaza
- if ill, feed 60 people twice a day
