Farm animal biosecurity continued Flashcards
Sanitizers definiton
Aim: reduce the number of microbial contamination on inanimate surfaces to levels considered safe from a public health POV.
Do not destroy or eliminate all bacteria or microorganisms
Many are a formulation of a detergent and disinfectant
Sterilization definition
A process (physical = extreme heat) or chemical (ethylene oxide) that destroys or eliminated all forms of life, especially microorganisms
Define disinfectant
Applied to inanimate object that destroys or irreversibly inactivates most pathogenic microorganisms, some viruses, not usually spores.
Define antiseptic
Applied to the surface of LIVING organisms or tissues to prevent or stop growth of microorganisms by inhibiting the organism or destroying.
NEVER USE IV!
What are detergents?
Used to disperse and remove soil and organic material from surfaces allowing the DISINFCTANT to reach and destroy microbes
Lot of disinfectants have detergent properties
Detergents also reduce surface tension and inc penetrating ability of water thereby allowing more organic material to be removed from surfaces
Chemical disinfectants
- Acids
- Aldehydes
- Oxidising agents
- Phenolics
- Quaterny ammonium products
- alcohols
- Know what a DEFRA approved disinfectant is and when it must be used
DEFRA approved disinfectant has undergone product efficacy testing and tested against specific pathogens and a general antimicrobial tests in labatory verified procedures
It is declared on the product label
website states the product, how to use, for what diseases and general use
What are physical disinfectants?
Heat (steam, sterilization)
Light UV
Radiation - microwaves, gamma radiation
