Bone 2 Flashcards
What is developmental orthopaedic disease?
Group of diseases involving musculoskeletal problesm
multifactorial aetiology
Disturbance in development- cartilage, bone
What is the Articualr epiphyseal cartilage complex? and what the of ossification occurs here?
Endrochondral ossification
AECC is the articular cartilage. in growing animals growth is much the same as in growth plate (physics)
Growing bone, where does primary and secondary ossification occur?
If abortive foetus what would be see
Primary = in diaphysis
secondary in epiphysis
Abortive foetus would see primary centres of ossification nice reddish colour
cartilage = white, unossified as secondary centres not kicked in yet
bone vs cartilage on XRAY
Bone = radio opaque = white cartilage = radiolucent = cannot see
Growth plate anatomy- list the diff sections
- resting cartilage
- proliferative cartilage
- hypertrophic cartialge
- calcification - BV migrate in to reabsorb cartilage matrix
- Ossification
Where could endrochondral ossification go wrong
Physeal growth plate - uneven growth
or
Articular-epiphyseal cartilage complex (AECC) - diseases affecting joints
give examples of Physeal growth plate malfunction
Abnormal deposition of matrix
Abnormal mineralisation of cartilage
Poor conversion to bone
Retention of cartilage: biggy. Not huge problem but manifests in horses with osteochondritis dysicans
result in: slow growth and uneven growth
Give examples of articular epiphyseal cartilage complex diseases
Abnormal deposition of matrix
Abnormal mineralisation
Retention of cartilage – more of a issue than at a growth plate
Result:
Slow growth – changes angle of bone growth
Uneven growth
Cartilage flaps- uneven retention = osteochondrosis or osteochondritis dessicans
