Q

Cause of the famine

A

-Rise in population
rose rapidly from 5 million in 1801 to 8 million in 1841

-Subdivision
Farmer divided his land between sons.
Most people depended on farming because there was no industry except for north-east Ulster. Less land for each son

-Dependence on the potato
Totally depended on potato as food source.
If it failed for a couple of years it could cause a famine.

-Potato blight
appeared in Ireland in autumn 1845.
Caused 1/3 of potato crop to fail.
Cottier class faced starvation.
