Q

What do Marxists believe about social policy?

A
It is a tool of social control used to benefit the bourgeoisie and oppress the proletariat.
They argue that social policy that appears to benefit the proletariat has either been battled for by the working class OR it actually benefits the working class.
20
Q

What did Donzelot (Marxist) conclude about family social policy?

A

Professionals carry out ‘surveillance’ on all families.

Poor families are targeted with surveillance and are then more likely to be identified as problem families.

21
Q

What do Feminists believe about social policy?

A

Social policy is formed on male assumptions about what a ‘normal’ family is like.
The state assumes ‘normal’ families are the traditional nuclear family and therefore offers policies such as tax breaks for married couples.

22
Q

What did Leonard (feminist) conclude about family social policy?

A

Policies appear to benefit women however they are actually reinforcing patriarchal values.
e.g. child benefit is normally paid to the mother. (reinforcing gender roles)

23
Q

Criticism that can be made of the feminist theory on social policy

A

There have been many acts to benefit women e.g.
Equal Pay Act
Equal rights to divorce
Marital rape made illegal
