Q

Advantages and disadvantages

A

Advantages
Each contraceptive method has its own advantage
The combine oral contraceptive pill which contains 2 hormones ( estrogen and progestin ) has non contraceptive benefits like regulation of menstrual flow, reduce menstrual loss and it is not dependent on sexual intercourse

The progestin only pill contains only one hormone progestin) it is also beneficial for reducing menstrual blood loss, it is particularly recommended to patient with hypertension or diabetes

The injectables also contain progestin., can be given every 2- 3months, it is beneficial in reducing ovulation pain, can be used by breast feeding mothers

The implants, these rods placed under the skin, and they could be one or two rods ( implanon has one rod, Jadelle has two .
They contain progestin which is a synthetic form of progesterone.

they provide contraception for 3- 5 years respectively. It can be removed at any time it may decrease blood loss during menstruation and can be used by hypertensive patients
The intrauterine device can either be hormonal or non hormonal and can caused be used for 5-10 years respectively. they both provide rapid return of fertility after removal, especially the non hormonal

The barrier method offers the advantage of protecting from sexually transmitted disease and it is relatively cheap

Disadvantages
The combined oral pill may worsen already existing hypertension and can predispose a hypertensive patient to having stroke.

The progestin only pill, does not protect
against sexually transmitted disease and can cause irregular blood loss like spotting which is also the same side effect of the injectables and implant
Also the pills has to be taken daily., this can lead to poor compliance.

The implants would require a minor surgical insertion and removal

The intrauterine devices can predispose a woman a pelvic infections in the first 3 weeks and can also cause increased blood loss during this period

The barrier method, has many drawbacks for example breakage, allergy if not used properly and it also reduces the spontaneity of sexual intercourse

The natural method is highly ineffective as they have a high failure rate

The surgical method, is usually a permanent method of contraception and only advised for those that have completed their family.
