Breastfeeding Is when a mother feeds her baby with breast milk. There are two patterns to breastfeeding; direct breastfeeding where there baby is fed directly
from the breast and the indirect which includes pumping and extracting breastmilk and feeding the baby with a cup and spoon or bottle.
Breast milk is a rich source of essential nutrients, antibodies and other crucial compound necessary for the infant development… the colostrum which is the initial or first breast milk produced is highly packed with nutrients and also very important for the new born. as the baby grows the breast milk adapts in composition to meet the child’s changing nutritional requirement.
Types , advantages and disadvantages
Types
We have three main types
Exclusive breastfeeding; this means feeding your baby with only breastmilk for the first 6 month of life, this is the pattern we recommend, and it Is also recommended by the World health organization
Supplementary breastfeeding this involves using formula milk along side breastfeeding usually before six month
Complementary breastfeeding: this is occurs when the breastmilk alone Is not enough to meet the needs of the growing child, usually after 6 months, so other foods and liquids are gradually added
Advantage
Breastfeeding has a lot of benefits to both mother and child
Mothers who breastfeed recover faster childbirth, it also
alas weignt loss . I connects tem emotonally to mell children, lowers the risk of getting breast cancer.
It can also naturally delay the return of periods and this may serve as a birth control method for a which and
breasteeding is generally cost friendly
For children, breastmilk gives them everything they need to grow well and stay healthy it protects them from illness such as diarrhea, which is common is formula fed children, it also help their brain grow and helps them attain milestones, it reduces the risk of chronic disease like childhood obesity, diabetes and asthma
Disadvantage
There are some disadvantages, however the advantage
The advantages far outweighs the disadvantages
Some of the disadvantage includes, stress for the mother.. sore nipples, embarrassment to breastfeed in public, mastitis and in some cases breast abscess
However not breastfeeding can put your child at greater risk of allergies and infections and mothers who do not breastfeed may miss out on the bonding experience
HELP
HELP
While you are breastfeed I advice you to
1) Clean your nipple and areola frequently
2) wash your underwears frequently and also wear loose comfortable clothes for easy access to feed
3) find a comfortable position for you and your baby to avoid back pain
4) ensure a good latch where the baby’s mouth covers most of the areola and not just the nipple and the chin is to the breast, this will reduce the incidence of sore nipples
5) practice bringing the baby to the breast and not the breast to the baby
6) Nurse frequently to establish and maintain a good milk supply
