We define genotype as the genetic makeup of an individual that Is usually passed from parents to their children we have 3 main types , the AA, AS and SS genotype. In the AA genotvpe, the blood cells are round in shape and
move through the blood vessels easily. however they are
prone to severe forms of malaria
The AS genotype the cells are also round in shape and they also move freely in the blood vessels, but they thought to be as a result of variable mutation in malaria prone areas. The AS genotype gives an added survival advantage to areas of high rate with malaria
We also have the SS genotype. which occurs when two AS who are carry the sickle cell trait procreate. the Ss genotype creates a blood disorder called sickle cell disease , here the individual has abnormally shaped red blood cells which stick together and block the blood flow to organs. depriving the organs of oxygen and nutrients which would eventually led to
organ failure
When both of you marry, with each pregnancy there is a 25% or 1 in 4 probability that each pregnancy will have a child with the SS genotype or AA genotype and 50% chance of having a child with the AS genotypes
In other words, with each pregnancy. there is a risk that the
child will a sicklier or healthy
When a child with sickle cell disease has a crisis, it usually painful and traumatic for the child and the parents . it can also be overwhelming as sickle cell disease management is emotionally financially and physically demanding, and many affected children don’t live up to adulthood because of the repeated injuries to their internal organs.
