Characteristics of family interviews?
Maximize time effectively, listen to all perspectives, multiple realities/open to difference, strength/problem focused, set boundaries, verbalize how their family functions, and decide on plan to help them function better.
What is the 15 minute interview?
Time to interview families (because of staff shortages, budget constraints, changes in healthcare delivery). Change our perspective that illness and health is a family affair.

What is therapeutic communication?
It’s the art of listening, it’s purposeful/time limited, build trust with patient so you can gain more info, potential for healing as you bring family together
What are manners?
Acts of courtesy (be kind, polite, respectful). Introduce roles, use names, eye contact, and encourage participation. This will contribute to growth of trusting relationships.
What are genograms and ecomaps?
Using them you assess internal/external structure, development, and function. It will engage family/give you a starting point.
What are therapeutic questions?
Think of at least 3 questions to routinely ask. Should be linear, circular, and interventive. Address sharing of info, expectations of hospital, challenges/suffering, most pressing problems. E.g. what is you main concern right now/how can we be helpful to you/what has worked for you in the past
What are commending family strengths?
Positive statements about family strengths/resources/competencies. Commendation- observation of behaviour across time/patterns of behaviours. Offer within 1st 10 min, at end of interaction, and before offering opinions.
Common errors for family interviews?
- Failing to create a context for change
- Taking sides
- Giving too much advice prematurely
Failing to create a context for change?
Both nurses/fam undergo change in creating context for change. This is the foundation of the therapeutic process. How to avoid- obtain understanding of most pressing concern/suffering, show interest/concern/respect for fam members, validate, and acknowledge suffering.
Taking sides?
Most common error and often unintentional. Results in fam members feeling disrespected/disempowered. Avoid by- maintain curiosity, ask questions to explore both ideas, give equal time/interest to fam members, avoid side conversations.
Giving too much advice prematurely?
Avoid by offer advice/commendations after assessment is done/after you have understanding of problem/health concerns. Ask more questions first in initial conversation than offer advice.
