CFIM Flashcards
What are nursing interventions?
Action/activity done by nurse with patients and it involves application of cognitive/verbal/physical functions. They are given in response to problem to achieve beneficial outcomes for pt
Interventive questions?
Intervention intended to effect change in the 3 domains of family functioning. Can use circular or linear questions.
Circular question?
Designed to reveal info, generate new understandings, and focus on relationships/connections between people, event, ideas, and beliefs. It invites reflection. Like who in your family is suffering the most as a result of this hospitalization?
Linear questions?
Focus is one cause/effect while capturing some data. Purpose is to gain information about family’s experiences. Risk of using them is they may constrain understanding/imply the nurse knows best.
Ultimate goals of nursing interventions?
Aid families members in discovering new solutions to help soften or alleviate emotional, physical, and spiritual suffering
Where do the most profound and sustaining changes happen?
In cognitive domain of fam functioning
True or false: Interventions should be targeted to promote, improve, or sustain functioning in the three domains of family functioning (cognitive, affective, and behavioural)
True
How to determine fit of intervention?
Fit is determined through therapeutic conversation/collab with family. It involves recognizing reciprocity between opinions/ideas and the experience of the fam (as it relates to the illness)
Types of interventions we use with families in nursing practice?
• Interventive questions
• Offer information
• Commend individual and family strengths
• Validate or normalize emotional response
• Encourage the telling of illness narratives
• Draw forth family support
• Encourage family members to be caregivers and offering caregiver support
- encourage rituals
- devise rituals
Goal of intervention in cognitive domain?
To change the perceptions and beliefs of family members by changing the way a family perceives a health problem so that family members can discover new solutions to problems
Examples of interventions in cognitive domain?
- Offer new ideas/info/beliefs about particular issue
- Commend fam and indivdual strengths
- Offer info and opinions
Goal of intervention in affective domain?
Reduce/increase intense emotions that may be impeding efforts around problem solving (to facilitate problem solving). The RN can assess type of emotions that impede family’s problem solving efforts.
Examples of interventions in affective domain?
• Validating/Normalizing Emotional Responses: “It’s normal to feel that way”
• Normalizing /reassuring changes in relationships due to illness
• Encouraging the Sharing of Illness Narratives
• Expression of the impact of illness on various fam members
• Drawing Forth Support
• Encouraging family members to listen to each other.
• Through providing opportunities for family members to express their feelings, the nurse can recognize and identify the family strengths/resources
Goal of intervention in behavioural domain?
To help family interaction with/behave differently in relation to each other to increase support etc.
Examples of interventions in behavioural domain?
- Invite fam members to engage in specific behavioural task
- Help fam memebrs change behaviour/interact in ways that are different from their normal
- Encourage fam members to be caregivers
- fam members may be intimidated by thought of providing care so a nurse support them
- Encourage respite
- devise rituals- what type of rituals does your fam engage in (daily, yearly, cultural)
