What is a family?
A group of people who share close interactions. usually tied by blood or law
family is now seen as the emotional relationships that people choose to have with each other
What is Kinship?
the patterns of a relationship and the sense of duty that people feel towards who they see as family
- can vary from culture to culture
what is a household?
people who share a house and its facilities
-these people may not be related.
What is extended family?
people who surround the parents and children: grandparents , aunts, uncles , cousins
They may share a home, live close together or far apart
What is the nuclear family?
consists of two generations: Parents and children- heterosexual
The most ideal family form- parsons(functionalists)
What is the expressive role in the family?
aspects of life that are based on emotional ties , rather than practical needs- female role
What is the instrumental role in the family ?
Aspects of family life that are based on practical needs, money, food
breadwinner- male role
what is cohabitation?
when a couple live together as though they were married but without having gone through the legal process
What is co-parenting ?
parenting situation where there are two or more people parenting a child but have never been romantic
What is a boomerang child?
adult children, returning to their parents home after a period away living independently
What is elective singlehood?
this occurs when someone choose to be single rather than part of a couple
what is a single parent?
Lone parent
single parent by choice
single through relationship breakdown
what is a blended/reconstituted family?
step families
a family formed when two people come together and bring a child or children from previous relationships may also have a child together
what is a Gay family?
same-sex couples(homosexual)
heaphy (2013)- now publicly acknowledged and need not be hidden
what is Living apart together (LAT)
couples have a household each although they maintain a close partnership
