What is equality of opportunity in education?
Every gets an equal chance
What is devolution?
transfer of powers and funding from national to local government.
Wales can now organize its own budget and can make desicions about education in wales
Now have the money and power
What are grammar schools?
A type of state school where children must pass a specific examination for acceptance- the 11+ exam
What are private/independent schools?
System whereby parent can pay for their children to attend independent schools- schools which charge fees
What are public schools?
fee-charging independent private schools

What are academy schools?
schools which are not run by local authorities and are often led by businesses and funded directly from central government
What is marketisation?
schools since the 1980’s compete for students
it was felt by government that competition between schools would lead to better education standards
What is fragmentation?
Education system is more split up and diverse- lots of different types of schools.
e.g faith schools, free schools, academies, grammar, comprehensive, private, public (elite private) and state
What is a curriculum?
It covers what subjects are taught and the standards children should reach in each subject
