Falls assessment Flashcards
What is an example of the a self report in the functional outcome measures?
Falls Efficacy Scale
What is an example of a patient outcome measure?
DASH
What is an example of a Observer-rated measure?
BESTest
What is an example of a Physiological measures?
Borg RPE
What is a self report outcome measure?
patient perception of impairment, function,
QOL
What is a patient outcome measure?
asks patient about impact of condition on activities and roles in life
What is a Observer-rated measures?
measures observed by PT
What is a Physiological measures?
measure single biological entity (ie, cognitive ability, pain, exertion)
Intrinsic risk factors
Gait and balance impairment
peripheral neuropathy
vestibular dysfunction
muscle weakness
vision impairment
medical illness
advanced age
impaired ADL
OA
dementia
drugs
Extrinsic Risk Factors
Environmental hazards
poor footwear
restraints
Ceiling effect outcome measure
too good for the test
Floor effect
not going to score high enough on the test
not being able to do 5 x STS instead doing 30 second chair rise
what is ankle strategy?
small disturbance of BOS
* may be limited when lacking ROM
what is hip strategy?
sudden and forceful disturbance
What is Stepping strategy?
COG displaced beyond limits of BOS
2 questions PT should ask in screen
a. History and context of falls
b. At least one question about the patient’s perception of difficulty with balance/walking
A screening is positive when either of the following conditions is found
- The patient reports multiple falls regardless of balance and gait impairments.
- The patient reports one fall and a gait or balance impairment is observed
Carotid sinus hypersensitivity leads to
bradycardia, vasodilation, and hypotension
results in syncope
These 5 things are part of intervention and w/in PT scope of practice
- strength training
- balance training
- gait training
- correction of environmental hazards
- correct footwear
Recommend shoes with these 2 things
low heel and high surface contact area on sole
