factors that affect voting behaviour within congress - interest groups + lobbyists Flashcards
one of the key factors that may influence how senators/congresspeople vote within congress is the pressure of
Lobbyists and intrest groups on them to vote a certain way
interests groups and lobbyists have political agendas and seek to convince members of congress to
vote in a way that befits them
there are an estimated over 12,000 lobbyists in Washington , in 2021 the total lobbying spend in the US was around
$3.78B
the most important way interest groups and lobbyists influence members if congress is through donating to their
election campaigns through Political Action Committees (PAC)
interest groups can also influence the likelihood of a member of congress being re elected by either
endorsing their candidacy or backing opponents in the primaries or general elections
some interest groups such as the AARP , have large , active memberships so members can
mobilise to create the threat of removal of members from congress
intrest groups can also mobilise public opinion over
a particular topic
the NRA was very successful in doing this in order to prevent the Obama administration passing legislation limiting
guns after a number of school shootings , desire clear majority support to do so
