development of federalism over time Flashcards
federalism isn’t static instead it has
developed and evolved as America has
at first federalism certainly delivered limited gov however in the latter party of the
19th century and first 2/3rds of the 20th century , a range of factors led to the remit and power of the fed gov increasing
the great depression was a huge economic downturn that affected all of the states from 1929 , particularly unemployment
only the fed gov let by FDR’s new deal had the
resources to reverse the economic downturn , fr example through great public work schemes
starting with WWII the USA played a much more inteventionalist role in global affairs in the second half of the 20th century , becoming a global power
this increased acceptance of foreign policy and participation of the US military in wars inevitably led to
the federal government becoming more high profile and powerful
through the majority of the 20th century the SC took a very liberal/expansive approach to the implied powers , in particular the necessary and proper/elastic clause and the commerce clause
this allowed the fed gov to
increase its power and reach into arrears that had previously been controlled by the states
a number of constitutional amendments increased the power of the federal government in relation to the states
the sixteenth ammendment increased the power of the federal government in relation to the states by allowing the
fed gov to impose an income tax on the indviduals within the states
westward expansion , immigration and natural population growth led to a rapidly expanding population , for exmaoke the population in 1790 was 4 million and is now 331 million in 2023
this growing population and geographical area required an enlarged
central gov to manage it
the development of the US economy into an industrial powerhouse in the 19th century led to a more joined up , nationwide economy as well as to the need for the
fed gov to regulate the industry
improvements in communication from railways to the internet led to the US population and economy being more interlinked across state boundaries
this increased interstate communication and commerce required the
federal gov to manage it
