congressional elections Flashcards
senators are elected for 6 years with
1/3 of them elected every 2 years
congressmen/congresswomen are all elected every
2 yrs
leading them to be being highly responsive to public opinion
first past the post is used in almost all elections , with he candidate with a
plurality of votes being elected
elections in Georgia and Louisiana are slightly different , if no candidate receives a majority of the vote than there is a
run off between the top two finishers to decide who is elected to the senate/house of representatives
if they are challenged by another member of their party , members of congress have to be elected in the
primary election among their party prior to the real election
elections that take place in-between presidential elections are known as
midterms
midterms are often described as a
referendum on the first two years of the presidency , with the presidents party usually losing a seat
in 2018 the democrats in midterms regained control of the house by winning
40 seats from the republicans , though in the senate the republicans bucked the overall trend and gained 2 seats
in 2022 the republicans in midterms regained control of the house but only narrowly picking up
13 seats from the democrats , in th senate the democrats retained control of the senate and gained a majority of 51-49 , originally was 50-50
in 2022 midterms the acclaimed red wave did not come despite Bidens poor approval ratings , this is largely contributed to the
overturning of roe v wade leading many voters to turn out in support of democrats
midterms are often highly significant in scuppering the presidents agenda by
removing their partys control of congress
the loss of control of congress that often happens is in part due to the ‘ coattails effect ‘ in
congressional elections when there is also a presidential elections
in ‘ coattail effect ‘ elections the presidents campaign helps their party in congress too , however by
the midterms 2 years later this coattails effect is gone and the presidents party also suffered
this is also in part due to turnout being lower in midterms
