What is situation?
Features of the immediate physical and social environment which may influence a person’s behaviour. The alternative is dispoisitonal factors where behaviour is explained in terms of personality
How does reducing legitimacy reduce obedience?
Reducing the legtimacy of an authority figure or the prestigness of a building reduces obedience.

How does proximity increase/ decrease obedience?
When the distance between the authority figure and participant is increased, obedience reduces
How does the behaviour of others reduce obedience?
Exposure to 2 role models who are disobedient decreases obedience.
In Milgram’s study where there was another “teacher” who disobeyed- obedience dropped to 10%
What is culture?
The ideas, customs and social behaviour of a particular group of people or society. Note that the term ‘culture’ does not describe the group of people- it refers to their shared practices and beliefs.
What do individulist cultures value?
Personal autonomy and self-reliance
What do collectivist cultures value?
loyalty to the group, interdependence and cooperation in pursuit of group goals

They asked ppts to deliver increasingly unkind insulta to a confederate who was applying for a job. 90% obeyed all 15 insults on the baseline test. 36% obeyed when the experimenter left the room. 16% obyed when there was 2 rebellious conferates

Australia has a PDI of 36% - obedience 28%
Poland has a PDI of 68%- obedience 90%
