Facial muscles Flashcards
What are the muscles that are involved with the movement of the jaw?
1) Masseter
2) Temporalis
3) Pterygoid muscles
- Medial
- Lateral
Where is the Masseter muscle located? (from–>to)
From the cheekbone to the ramus of the mandible
Where is the Temporalis muscle located? (from–>to)
Over temporalis bone - converges into a tendon that inserts onto the coronoid process of the mandible
Where are the Pterygoid muscle located? (from–>to)
Underneath the zygomatic arch
Medial:
- Deep to the lateral muscle
- From the Pterygoid plate to the mandibular angle
- Quadrangular in shape
Lateral:
- Superficial to the medial Pterygoid muscle
- From the Pterygoid plate to the neck of the mandible
- Triangular in shape
How are the Pterygoid muscles best seen and why?
From the inside of the skull - very deep muscles underneath the zygomatic arch
What is the function of the masseter muscle?
Close the mouth (elevate the jaw)
What is the function of the
temporalis muscle?
Bilaterally - Retract the jaw
Close the mouth (elevate the jaw)
Unilaterally - Helps to move the jaw side-side
What is the function of the medial pterygoid muscle?
Close the mouth (elevate the jaw)
What is the function of the lateral pterygoid muscle?
Bilaterally - protract the mandible
Unilaterally - Move jaw side to side
What are the muscles involved in facial expression?
