why is facial growth important?
the size, shape and position of the underlying jaws determine the position of teeth and therefore the MALOCCLUSION
why is facial growth study important to orthodontists?
- insight to how face grows (predict changes, help with diagnoses and treatment plans)
- understand how anomalies occur
- measure changes in growth with cephalometry
what is a primary abnormality?
defect in the structure of an organ/part of organ that can be traced back to an anomaly in its development (spina bifida, cleft lip, etc)
what is a secondary abnormality?
interruption of the the normal development of an organ that can be traced back to other influences (chemical agents, viruses, trauma)
what is foetal alcohol syndrome?
group of conditions that relate to a child who was exposed to alcohol before birth.
[small head, short nose, small midface, small mandible]
what is treacher collins syndrome?
a mandibulofacial dysostosis (disorder)
[affects: zygomatic arches, mandible, ears, eyelids]
what are dental features of patients with facial abnormalities/syndromes?
- impacted teeth
- crowding
- hypodontia
- supernumeraries
- hypoplastic teeth
- caries
