Muscles of Facial Expression
Occipitofrontalis
Frontal belly:
Pulls the scalp anteriorly
Wrinkles the forehead
Protects the scalp
Elevates the eyebrows
Motor Supply by the temporal branch of CN VII
Occipital Belly:
Pulls the scalp posteriorly smoothing the forehead
Motor supply by the posterior auricular nerve of CN VII
Muscles of Facial Expression
Platysma
Thin Sheet muscle located in the superficial fascia of the neck
From the base of the mandible, cheek, lower lip, angle of the mouth and orbicular ores to the deltopectoral fascia
Function:
Tenses the skin producing vertical skin ridges
Helps depress the mandible and draw the corner of the mouth inferiorly
Motor innervation:
Cervical branch of VII
Sensory innervation:
Transverse cervical nerve
Supraclavicular nerves
Muscles of Facial Expression: related to the ear
Auricularis muscles:
Three fan shaped extrinsic muscles of the ear
1. Anterior
Draws the auricular forward and upward
